Medical cannabis clinicians welcomed during European Cannabis Week
During European Cannabis Week, The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society was pleased to host an event for the sector.
Meet The First Medical Cannabis Clinicians. On Wednesday 26 June 2019, over 45 licensed producers, researchers, clinicians and sector professionals gathered at The Grand Connaught Rooms in Holborn to enjoy a lively and informal event hosted by the MCCS Executive Committee.
About the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society
The MCCS is a community of medical cannabis pioneers - the first prescribers of this treatment in the UK. The Society is an expert-led, independent, not-for-profit community, dedicated to bringing this safe, legal and effective medicine to people living with chronic conditions.
The event was hosted by Chair, Professor Mike Barnes who introduced the Society’s vision, mission and plans for the forthcoming year. Professor Barnes opened the event with an introduction to the Society’s mission - to give clinicians access to evidence, training, expert guidance, peer support and licensed product information so they can prescribe life-changing medical cannabis treatments to all patients in the UK. Looking to partner with sector organisations able to support with unrestricted educational grants, Professor Barnes went on to explain the benefits available for supporters for the UK’s pioneering medical cannabis doctors through a range of education, events and networking opportunities via the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society.
A lively lunchtime event for sector professionals
Society Vice-Chair, Dr Dani Gordon, spoke on the following topic: “Supporting clinicians to be confident, expert prescribers of medical cannabis so we can serve our patients.” Dr Gordon told to attendees about her experiences as a prescribing clinician in Canada and the professional support from a network of prescribing doctors which enabled her to develop in her medical cannabis practice.
Executive Director and Patient Advocate, Hannah Deacon is driven to support the UK’s medical cannabis clinicians due to her experience of fighting to access medical cannabis on behalf of her son, Alfie, who lives with severe epilepsy. Hannah spoke about her fight to access medical cannabis treatment and the crucial importance of education and peer support for the UK’s doctors, which she believes is a key part of opening access to this life-changing treatment to everyone who could benefit from it.
The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society welcomed attendees from a range of sector organisations, including Canadian, Australian and UK licensed producers - C4 Labs, Althea, Neamelea, Grass & Co and the Hikurangi Cannabis Company, plus members of the Society’s executive committee, researchers, medical students, wellness advocates, sector investors and more.
Networking continued for over an hour following the lunchtime event, with attendees enjoying canapes and conversation into the late afternoon.
Great to be a part of the medical cannabis conversation
The MMCS Executive Committee was proud to be part of the European Cannabis Week events, with members also taking part and speaking at events hosted by The Academy of Medical Cannabis and Cannabis Europa.
